(The Mono Craters in the Eastern Sierras of California last erupted roughly 500 years ago, but intermittent rhyolitic flows over ten millennia have created a diverse landscape of rock piles, scree slopes and volcanic plugs. The Obsidian Dome is one in a chain of these singular geologic phenomena.)
